When I first tried the game at the Eurogamer Expo in 2013, my mind immediately went to R-Type, a side-scrolling space shooter that I adored – but was abysmally bad at – when I was a kid (it came out in 1987 so I’ll let you take a stab at my age) and smaller moments like the UFOs which come flying along the top of the screen to kidnap humans can only but draw comparisons to Space Invaders.īut it’s all well and good explaining the games that Resogun reminds me of, but how is Resogun when you look at it upon it’s own merits? Well, if you hadn’t guessed from my waxing lyrical about it so far, it’s pretty darn good. There are more than a few nods to some classic games. I’m not usually one to go straight into the aesthetics of a game, but IT’S SO PRETTY.

While graphics are no measure of a game’s quality, especially when the gameplay isn’t anything particularly sophisticated, the frenetic nature of Resogun and it’s beautiful presentation and quick, smooth settings means that it enhances the gameplay that’s already there.

Being a next-generation title and a PS4 exclusive means that Resogun looks gorgeous. It works, it has always worked and it doesn’t really need tampering with.īut sticking to a tried and true formula isn’t always a guarantee for success, and it’s the execution of that formula and building upon it which makes a game of Resogun’s ilk a success. It’s pretty much the key formula for not only most side-scrolling shooters ever made, but also a good proportion of games from the 8-bit generation. There’s no plot to speak of, all you have are levels which require you to rescue as many of the last humans as you possibly can, while defeating wave upon wave of enemies until you encounter the BIG BOSS. There’s no great story or even secret to the brilliance of Resogun. Having been six months late to joining the PS4 party, I’m only just getting around to comprehensively playing and reviewing Resogun, but the wait was worth it, especially when you take the newly-released DLC into account.

A PS4 launch title, released on the Playstation Network in November 2013, it has recently had a significant DLC update which builds up on its already addictive gameplay. Resogun very much fall into that category. You’re pretty much guaranteed that if you go back to a shooter from any of the last four decades right back to Space Invaders that you’ll be able to pick and play any of them with very little fuss or confusion. Side-scrolling shooters have never gone out of fashion, ever since Space Invaders reared it’s head in 1978 there has been a slew of side-on shooters, whether set in space, on Earth or somewhere else, that have always stuck to a tried-and-true formula.
